3 Faces
Iranian Cinema • 1h 40m
Jafar Panahi • Iran-USA • 2018 • An Iranian road film, foregrounding female perspectives.
Behnaz has received an alarming video. Marziyeh, a young woman, personally appeals to Behnaz for help, then appears to commit suicide onscreen. Visibly shaken, Benhaz walks off the set of her new film mid-production, and hires Jafar, a taxi driver, to bring her to the woman’s small village near the Turkish border. On the long journey Behnaz and Jafar analyze what they have seen; when they arrive, a more complicated reality awaits them.
Exploring the fault lines between public and private lives, 3 Faces is a deceptively simple Iranian road film, foregrounding female perspectives in a subtle act of solidarity. The latest narrative feature from celebrated filmmaker Jafar Panahi (Taxi, This is Not a Film) premiered at San Sebastián, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Toronto, and Cannes, where it won Best Screenplay. 3 Faces is a New York Times Critic’s Pick.
