An embedded migrant journey to retrace the steps of the missing.
The Arizona desert is a harsh and unforgiving landscape, without shade or water, that serves as the crossing point for many illegal migrants from Mexico to America. One day an unidentified migrant’s body is discovered there—the only identifying feature is a tattoo, bearing the name Dayani Cristal. Determined to ascertain the man’s identity, director Marc Silver and Gael Garcia Bernal embed themselves among migrant travelers on their own mission to cross the border.
Providing rare insight into the human stories so often ignored in the immigration debate, Who Is Dayani Cristal? compassionately retraces the steps of so many who have gone missing. Marc Silver’s second documentary premiered at San Sebastián; Abu Dhabi, where it won a Special Jury Award; and Sundance, where it won Best Cinematography - World Cinema Documentary.
