My Wonderful Wanda
The Future is Female (Directors): All Films • 1h 51m
Bettina Oberli • Switzerland, Germany • 2020 • A delightful satire of the haves and the have-nots.
Wanda left two young sons with her parents in Warsaw to travel to Switzerland in search of gainful employment. Here she labors as an in-home caregiver, tending to Josef, a wealthy industrialist, as he suffers the aftermath of a stroke. Yet Josef yearns for Wanda to provide services beyond her job description, and despite her best efforts she is soon sucked into the squabbles and politics of his dysfunctional family.
Set on the placid grounds of Lake Zürich, My Wonderful Wanda gently navigates the complicated class and culture disparities facing domestic workers in Europe. Bettina Oberli’s sixth feature premiered at Zurich, São Paulo, and Tribeca, where it won a Special Mention.
