My Friend Victoria
Jean Paul Civeyrac • France • 2014 • A beguiling exploration of class and racial identity in France.
At age 8, a young black orphan spends the night at the home of one of her white schoolmates. Though brief, this encounter haunts Victoria for years to come, offering her a glimpse at a life of privilege and tranquility that appears, to her at least, impossible to attain. As a young adult, Victoria reunites with the family’s youngest son during a summer fling that will alter the course of her life yet again.
Adapted from the short story by Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing, My Friend Victoria is a poignant, beguiling exploration of class and racial identity in contemporary France. Jean Paul Civeyrac’s eighth film premiered at Hong Kong and BFI London.
