Lady Chatterley

Lady Chatterley

Pascale Ferran • France • 2006 • The first adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence novel by a woman.

Constance Chatterley lives a rather monotonous life on the sprawling grounds of her husband’s estate. The upper-class gentleman Clifford Chatterley, once handsome and virile, has been paralyzed from the waist down following an injury in the Great War. As spring blossoms, and with it the fields and verdant forests, Lady Chatterley begins a romance with Olivier Mellors, the estate’s gamekeeper. Through their corporeal encounters, Lady Chatterley discovers that love resides not in the mind alone.

The first adaptation of the banned D.H. Lawrence novel to be directed by a woman, Lady Chatterley is a raw, sensual portrait of female sexual liberation and class difference in early 20th century France. Pascale Ferran’s fourth film premiered at Berlin, Stockholm and Tribeca, where it won Best Actress. Lady Chatterley was nominated for 9 César Awards, winning five, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film.
