Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam • India-USA • 2018 • An exile Tibetan woman's search for closure.
Dolkar fled Tibet as an eight-year-old child, crossing a treacherous mountain pass knee-deep in snow. Here a tragedy occurred which Dolkar has suppressed for much of her adult life. Living in exile in Dehli, she works as a human rights activist, dedicated to helping Tibetan refugee communities in the Indian city. Her work leads to an unexpected encounter with Gombo, the guide who abandoned them all those years ago and who Dolkar holds responsible for the events that followed. As she uneasily aids Gombo in his own quest for justice, memories of Dolkar’s escape rush to the surface.
Elliptically moving between the past and the present, The Sweet Requiem is a mature, understated drama. Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam’s film premiered at Toronto, Seattle, Sydney, and Tromsø.
