Jean Paul Civeyrac • France • 2018• An edification amid the hedonism and disillusion of youth.
Étienne leaves his working-class existence in Lyon for Paris, where he dreams of becoming an auteur. Here Etienne quickly falls in with a new crowd—he passes his days with fellow filmmaking students Mathias and Jean-Noël, smoking, drinking, and pontificating on art, cinema, and politics. He ponders what it means to cheat, as his longtime girlfriend Lucie remains in Lyon while he cycles through a series of lovers, some of whom he loves, some of whom love him, and others with whom a future is impossible.
Steeped in the bohemian-intellectual tradition of the French New Wave, A Paris Education traces a young man’s edification amid the hedonism, self-doubt, and disillusion of youth. Jean Paul Civeyrac’s ninth film premiered at Berlin, BFI London, IndieLisboa and Taipei.
