Prior to starting his PhD, the young Brazilian Gabriel embarks on a year-long voyage across the globe. He has a particular interest in poverty in West Africa, where he tragically perishes while climbing Mount Malawi. Based on the true story of a close friend, director Fellipe Barbosa recreates Gabriel's fateful journey, tracing his final steps and ultimately encountering the many friends he made along the way. A thrilling mix of fictional recreation and documentary reality, Gabriel and the Mountain poses provocative questions about sociopolitical issues in the world today through the eyes of a young man who dedicated his life— both academic and personal—, to such work.
Fellipe Barbosa's second film premiered at Cannes' Semaine de la Critique, Stockholm, São Paulo, Munich and Lima, where it won Best Director and Best Cinematography. Gabriel and the Mountain opens this week in NYC at the Quad Cinema.
